In this short Video, Dan Sullivan talks about the fundamentals of Pulse Width Modulation (or PWM).

It’s critical to understand PWM as you’re sure to come across it whilst you’re performing component analysis.

The oscilloscope and voltage probe is probably the best tool to evaluate PWM. The current clamp can be used to determine current flow within an actuator PWM (such as an inlet metering valve). The voltage probe (and a measurement channel) can be used to determine the on-time for a command signal (such as between a powertrain control module and a cooling fan control module).

Don’t forget that PWM can be substituted, if required, during diagnostics with a sensor simulator, or with a manual control (special tool number 1).
